So, you may be wondering how is my approach to teaching DIY projects different than others? Well, my years of teaching students in a classroom has taught me that everyone has a different style of learning new things. Some learn at a slower pace, while others plow through things quickly and with no trepidation. I have been successful in teaching very technical and advanced information by meeting the student where they are in the learning process. In order to do that, you need to have different levels and styles of instruction for a student learning a new concept or skill.
My website is set up for each level of learner with different types of instruction. I have videos for visual and auditory learners and step by step written instructions for those analytical learners. I have taken into consideration that we have preferences when learning something new and unfamiliar.
I have created categories for each type of learner based on what previous knowledge and skills you have. Each craft medium has been divided into a level that makes it easier for you to learn in the style and pace you feel most comfortable. You may be a “New Kid in Class” for one type of project but the “Honor Student” in another. The format for each project is the same, but the pace and steps will vary depending on your experience in that medium.
New Kid in Class – this level is for the crafter who is brand new and has never tried to create anything with their new supplies and tools. The instruction is detailed and presented in simple steps that start with the basics to build a strong foundation for learning more difficult future projects.
Student in the Front Row – this level is for the crafter with some experience and knowledge in executing multiple step projects. This crafter is ready to learn something new using their existing skill set and applying it in a new way. The lesson and steps provided assume you already have a previous basic knowledge of how to use the products needed to complete it. This crafter is more focused on the steps to make the item rather than how to use the equipment and supplies.
Honors Student – this level is for the experienced crafter looking to make some fun and creative DIY projects. This crafter has completed projects on their own successfully and is looking for some new and challenging ideas to create. The projects are for crafters who have mastered the use of their equipment and are looking for a faster paced presentation of a DIY project.
